On November 3rd 2018 I took my first flight to Phoenix Arizona to attend the 2018 Showit United Conference. This is a 4 day conference for photographers. There are speakers from the most inspiring artists in the industry, Break out sessions to learn more in depth about specific topics to help your business, and surrounded by 400+ of the nicest people.
I had the opportunity to meet Amy and Jordan Demos, meet some new friends and listen to Katelyn James, Jasmine Star, Natalie Franke…and much more.
What i learned:
To be personal. As photographers we are not people who are just selling our service. Yes we are professionals, but having a true connection with our clients is super important. People want to see who is behind the camera. If we have similar interests/hobbies. Couples are more than just clients, they are also people that become our friends and people whom we really care about. I always want to learn about my couple, and they should be able to learn about me too.
Take lead. Do what needs to get one to achieve beautiful photos.
People are paying us to give them images that they expect from us. If a getting ready location is cluttered, find someone to help un clutter it or do it yourself. Don’t be afraid to move around furniture, open windows, turn off those warm lights…etc. If you also have to look around the location to find a spot with more natural light, go ahead and move your bride to that location. She will thank you later. You can take a bad lighting situation and make it photo worthy just by making adjustments and taking lead.
You are enough. The photography field is SUPER and i mean SUPER competitive. We are constantly seeing others work they have done, comparing ourselves to the top page on instagram. Comparing our photography and lives to others. But we have to realize not one photography business is the same. You have to focus on your own path, create your own work and the clients you want and deserve will find, book and connect with you. Instead of focusing on the negative, and the im not good enough….focus on your development. Your work. and what you are capable of. Everyone starts somewhere. Everyone has their own path to success.
There were a few special events that United had to offer as well. We had dinner at the Phoenix Zoo. We got to see their Christmas lights the first night they were up. Let me tell you, they did not disappoint! There was also a Gala which was so much fun. It was nice to be able to dress up and enjoy a fancy dinner. We made smores from the candles on our table(haha) and took pictures with llamas!(my sister is OBSESSED so that was exciting)…and had some photobooth fun.
I also attended two styled shoots. I HAD to get my hands on the Arizona landscape. And the photos turned out BEAUTIFUL. I just love the neutral grounds, the cactus and lighting. I had the honor of learning from Ryann Lindsey and Suzy Goodrick. They are amazing photographers and I am still in awe that I got to meet them.
Pictures from Ryann Lindseys “A United Love Story”. What was so awesome is that the bride and groom models, Chris and Michaela. Just got married a week or so before this shoot! They also met at the conference. Now how sweet is that?!?!
